Programs Overview

The newest and best research demonstrates the critical importance of high quality early education for 3- to 5-year-olds. May Center’s new Early Childhood Program celebrates the joys of learning and growing in a nurturing environment specially designed for younger students.

early childhooD PROGRAM: Ages 3 - 4

May Center’s Early Childhood Program celebrates the joys of learning and growing in a nurturing Montessori environment specially designed for younger students.

Our Early Childhood Program offers:

  • Montessori Approach with New Mexico’s 2017 Montessori Teacher of the Year, Daisy Guranich

  • A special emphasis on oral language development and pre-reading skills.

  • Frequent opportunities for cooperative play and socialization.

  • Valuable feedback to parents on their child’s growth and development.

  • A low student/teacher ratio of 6:1.

Our structured, hands-on learning program utilizes Montessori materials that foster:

  • Creativity

  • Concentration

  • Fine-motor Skills

  • Independence and Pride of Self

  • Self-Regulation

  • Problem Solving

ELEMENTARY: K - 3 GRADE PROGRAM

Our Elementary School Program classrooms are Montessori-based, allowing for individualization and hands-on, multi-sensory learning while building executive functioning skills. In addition, all students participate in daily language therapy classes focused on individualized support in a certified structured literacy curriculum.

The Elementary classrooms address the following areas of learning:

  • Practical Life

  • Social Emotional

  • Sensorial

  • Language

  • Oral Language

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • Cultural

  • Arts

  • Bodily Movement

  • Executive Functioning

Elementary students have the opportunity for arts-integration across the curriculum as a way to develop the ability to see things from multiple perspectives while engaging in creative, problem-solving projects. Societies are a time when students learn social studies and science content through the immersive experience of role-play. All Elementary school students also have the opportunity to participate in music, visual arts, physical education, social skills, and mindfulness.

INTERMEDIATE: 4-8 GRADE PROGRAM

The Intermediate School serves grades 4-8. Intermediate students have daily language therapy classes focused on individualized support in certified structured literacy curriculum. An emphasis on reading comprehension, academic language, vocabulary building, and developing critical thinking skills is present across the curriculum.

May Center’s arts integration program teaches students to be creative problem-solvers through understanding multiple points of view, design thinking, and an emphasis on developing executive functioning skills. Students also receive explicit instruction in social-emotional learning (SEL) with relevant practice in social skills and mindfulness. In addition, Intermediate School students participate in a number of special programs throughout the year, including our Winter Ski and Sports Program, Trout in the Classroom, and the community science project Watershed Watch, which provides hands-on science in a real-world context.
