Advocacy Work

In the Legislature
May Center has advocated in the legislature, supporting New Mexico Senate Bill 398 on Dyslexia Early Identification and Intervention, which became law in April 2019. This bill dramatically changed the way reading is taught in New Mexico, ensuring that all teachers understand the science of reading.

More recently, we supported New Mexico Senate Bill 242 on Teacher Preparation Programs and the Science of Reading, which was amended into House Bill 156 and became law in April 2025. This bill requires New Mexico’s colleges of education to ensure that teacher candidates are provided with a robust education in the science of reading, BEFORE they enter the classroom.

In the Media
Our Executive Director Amy Miller has been a featured guest on podcast episodes, highlighting the importance of supporting student literacy outcomes at the local, state, and national levels.
