Your donation supports financial aid and our community outreach programs so that more students in New Mexico benefit from May Center's expertise and support. It takes ALL of us to make a difference for students with learning differences—ONE student at a time. To make a pledge or give now, please visit: https://www.maycenter.org/support-may-center

All for one and one for all

Multisensory Writing

Research tells us that students learn best when they are able to practice skills using a variety of multi-sensory tools.  Mich is teaching her students parts of a paragraph using a number of multi-sensory tools.   Her students color code components of their paragraphs and even have physical movements to help them name and describe parts of a paragraph.  Great work, Ms. Mich and students!

Fish in a Tree

Ms. BB’s students finished reading Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. This is a story of a young girl’s journey of discovering she has dyslexia. When asked about the book, Ms. BB’s students shared that the girl thinks she’s not smart and gets into trouble, until she works with a teacher who understands her challenges. The teacher works with her in spelling by having her write in shaving cream.  Ms. BB’s students had fun practicing writing in shaving cream this week as a way to celebrate the end of their novel study.

Thank you, Resolve

Intermediate remote students along with Mich and Deanna’s students finished a six-week course offered by Resolve. Throughout this course, students practiced setting verbal and physical boundaries, noticing the “uh-oh” feelings that can come up when interacting with others, matching body language and facial expressions with their words and asking for help.   These skills are in alignment with what we practice with our students in relation to relationship building and self-advocacy.   We’re grateful to Alena and Jorge, Resolve instructors, for their skilled work with our students.

Trout update

We’re happy to report that the trout are alive and well. Students continue to learn how to care for the trout by testing the water chemistry, changing it as necessary and making sure the environment is simulating the natural environment. It’s great to hear the students guide and encourage one another when working on this project. Be on the lookout for news regarding when the trout will be released later this spring!
