Puppet Making

Ms. Ellen is quite masterful when it comes to following the lead of her students.  She simply provided fabric and sewing materials to her students as a free choice activity.  Her students began making puppets out of the materials and soon their puppets took on a life of their own.  Students fully developed their characters and are now using them to practice descriptive and narrative writing.

Field Trips

Teachers and students alike are thrilled to be able to go on field trips again. This is the first week the Maymobile has been back in action in over a year!

  • Ms. Caitlin and Ms. Ellen’s classes ventured to Salvador Perez park for much needed outdoor time.

  • Ms. Corrie and Ms. Trudy’s classes took their first hiking club journey to and from Museum Hill.

  • Ms. Daisy was the bravest of all by taking her 3-6 year olds to Violet Crown for a movie afternoon.

We’re excited to be able to have our students back in the greater community!

Interdisciplinary unit on China

Ms. Gabriella’s students dove into an interdisciplinary unit on China featuring Chinese calligraphy worksheets to share with other classes and projects involving the art of cherry blossom painting, the science of springtime pollination, and the history of the Great Wall of China.  Next, they will create a persuasive presentation on why to study and visit ancient China.

Thank you, Ms. Gabriella and students, for sharing your studies with others!

COMMUNITY SEMINAR: STORY FRAMES FOR TEACHING LITERACY BOOK DISCUSSION

THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 6:00-7:00 PM, FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Join Story Frames for Teaching Literacy author Carolee Dean, M.S., CCC-SLP, CALT, and May Center Executive Director Amy Miller, who also authored a chapter in the book, in a discussion about the use of story frames as an effective way to teach writing.

Mastering the art of storytelling isn’t just a goal for professional writers.  Analyzing and creating stories can boost critical literacy skills for all learners—and this comprehensive resource will show teachers and Speech Language Pathologists how.
