Week of December 9
A PEEK INTO OUR EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM
If you’ve ever had a chance to sit in Ms. Daisy’s class you know it’s a treat to witness the learning and calm energy in the classroom. Her students are gaining a strong foundation in academic skills. In addition to learning letters, numbers and beginning reading skills, they also develop incredible self regulation skills. This is accomplished through the routines that are established in the classroom, explicit teaching of recognizing and naming emotions, and the daily practice of moving through a work cycle.
Know anyone looking for a high quality Pre-K? We have openings available in January! Families can schedule a tour by calling 983-7407.
HOUR OF CODE
Thanks to the generous support of a May Center parent, elementary and intermediate students will have the opportunity to participate in an Hour of Code challenge next week. Hour of Code, hosted by code.org, is a fun way to teach students computer programming basics. Students will participate in a tutorial and work towards completing an engaging challenge.
GLORIETA FIELD TRIP
Intermediate students are studying the Civil War in Language Arts. This week students braved the cold weather and had the opportunity to visit the Pecos National Historical Park to visit the Glorieta Battlefield. You can learn more about the Glorieta Battlefield here. Upon returning to school, students completed activities related to the field trip to earn badges and patches.
THE WAY I SEE IT INTERMEDIATE ELECTIVES
This week, your child will receive a survey to choose their spring arts electives. All arts electives will be focused on our spring production of The Way I See It, a play that May School students wrote with Amy Miller five years ago.
Students will be asked to rank their elective choices 1-3, with 1 being their first choice, and 3 being their last choice. Every student will be placed in 2 different electives. We will do our best to place students in their first and second choice electives, but balancing the class numbers may necessitate some flexibility. Below are the elective choices:
Stagecraft with Ms. Marjorie
Stagecraft is an art class focused on creating the set, costumes, and props for the play. Students will have the opportunity to work in a variety of mediums including wood working on all visual artistic elements of the play.
Creative Movement with Mr. Ben
Creative Movement is a movement class that focuses on creating a “chorus of movement” that will accompany the action of the play. Students will have the opportunity to compose movement sequences, as well as play movement improvisation games. The focus of this class is how we can use nonverbal communication and physical listening to better communicate with others.
Musicians and Singers with Mx. Newsong
Musicians and Singers is a music class focused on composing and performing the original songs for the play. Students will have the opportunity to engage in collaborative songwriting and perform various roles related to the songs that will be in the play.
In addition to these elective choices, we will hold after school rehearsals for those students who have primary speaking roles in the play. Auditions for the primary speaking roles will take place the week of February 3, with rehearsals meeting after school approximately 2 days a week from February through April. We will do our best to accommodate students’ other after school activities. Students ages 8 and up are encouraged to audition for these roles in the play.
We look forward to this creative, collaborative endeavor! Please contact Amy Miller (amy@maycenter.org) if you have any questions.
