PERSEVERANCE
Thanks to a hot tip from Ms. BB, Intermediate students had the opportunity to watch the landing of NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars this week. The landing was named “seven minutes of terror” as the landing sequence happens much quicker than radio signals can reach Earth from Mars. Scientists had to stand by as they hoped for a signal of a successful landing. To everyone’s excitement (there were audible cheers from our students and teachers) the landing was successful.
We are excited to follow what scientists learn from the samples they take from Mars. The top question is whether or not they will find signs of ancient life through the collection of rock and soil samples. What a great tie-in to the soil science our students have been learning!
CHINESE NEW YEAR
Students in Ms. Ellen and Ms. Jamie’s classes learned about traditions surrounding Chinese New Year which was celebrated on February 12th. Some of their favorite facts they learned included children receiving gifts of food and money, there are parades to celebrate the New Year and learning about the animal that represents the year they were born. This year is the year of the Metal Ox which sends the message that “success will come to those who work hard.”
SNOW FUN
May School students enjoyed time in the snow this week whether at school or at home. Ms. Ellen’s class enjoyed a nature walk and were excited to find icicles hanging off trees. Ms. Trudy’s and Ms. Corrie’s classes had grand snowball fights. Ms. Stephanie’s science class got to compete for who had the most snowfall at their houses and learned about the world’s largest snowflake that measured 15 inches. We also hear that a few lucky students got to enjoy some time skiing and snowboarding.
COVID UPDATES
Updated Health and Safety Conduct Policy
Last week, Governor Lujan Grisham announced that Santa Fe is in the yellow, with a rate of COVID transmission dropping to below 5%. We are encouraged by this development. Governor Lujan Grisham also repealed the executive order mandating a 14-day quarantine after out of state travel. In light of these developments, May Center has revised our health conduct policy to be in alignment with suggestions from the CDC.
Here is the updated language regarding travel:
Family Members will quarantine for 3 days should they travel out of state or come into close contact with someone who has traveled outside of the state. Children will test on day 3 after returning home or on day 3 after initial contact and will not return to school until they receive negative test results.
