Book Chats with Ms. Carol

Thursday, January 23 | 5:00–6:30 pm

Join Ms. Carol and other parents/teachers for a book chat on The Whole-Brain Child by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson. You are welcome to attend even if you haven’t read the book! This is a wonderful chance to connect with other parents and educators to discuss our experiences and get support and encouragement.

We will touch on the 12 whole-brain strategies featured in the book. These strategies provide great tools for engaging with our kids. Join us to find out more about them and enjoy an informal, supportive chat about how we might use them in our daily lives.

  1. Connect and Redirect

  2. Name It to Tame It

  3. Engage, Don’t Engage

  4. Use It, or Lose It

  5. Move It, or Lose It

  6. Remember to Remember

  7. Use the Remote of the Mind

  8. Let the Clouds of Emotion Roll By

  9. SIFT

  10. Exercise Mindsight

  11. Increase the Family Fun Factor

  12. Connect through Conflict

Please RSVP to Ms. Carol at carol@maycenter.org and let us know if you will need childcare, so we can accommodate everyone! Light refreshments will be served.

Owl Vision

Science: This week, the Elementary students explored the rock cycle, microscopes, and building with Lego bricks and marble runs.

Ms. Nia’s class explored 1st- and 2nd-class levers as part of their learning about simple machines. They also practiced measuring the force needed to lift the load using a spring scale.

The Intermediate students engaged in a microscopic forensics lab kit, examining known fibers and evidence samples and comparing them to unknown evidence collected at our simulated mystery of the murdered rare butterflies. Who did the evidence point to? Ask your student from Ms. Jennifer or Ms. Corrie’s class to find out!

Reading: This week in Jack’s Reading Room, students from Ms. Clementine and Ms. Caitlin’s classes read Pug and The Very Cranky Bear, another book about hibernating. They also colored pictures of animals and snowflakes.

Ms. Lisa’s class continued having the school body vote for their favorite pet in The New Mexican Pet Calendar. This week, they tallied all their votes; named first, second, and third place winners; and put up a poster with the results!

Students from Ms. Ellen and Ms. Jennifer’s classes read and researched about Balto the Dog who led a team of sled dogs to deliver life-saving medicine in Alaska.

Ms. Nia’s class began their novel study of A Wolf Called Wander, and students from Ms. Jennifer and Ms. Corrie’s classes continued their novel study of A Bridge to Terabithia.

Art: This week, the students painted wild eyes! After that, they chose to make a hand drum or a winter squirrel.

Around the Nest

Thank you to Max for bringing in colored clay from an arroyo in the Galisteo Basin to paint with!

Have a wonderful weekend!
