Elder Watershed Interviews

May Center students in Ms. Corrie’s class collaborated with River Source and college students Emily and Sydney (attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute) to help students connect with their elders.

To begin, students requested consent to interview record answers to questions. Then students practiced active listening while in conversation. In these interviews, elders share their thoughts on a body of water from their childhoods that had special significance.

Pastel Landscapes

Students in Ms. Eleanor’s class started off Art class in January with chalk pastel surrealist landscapes.

Students looked at the work of artist Amy Lincoln in connection to the movement of surrealism. Students then brainstormed and sketched ideas for their own surrealist landscapes, drawing on both reference photographs and imaginary spaces for their foregrounds, middle grounds, and backgrounds while exploring the medium of chalk pastel.

Parent Support Meetings

The Southwest Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (SWIDA) is proud to present Parent Support Meetings on a bi-monthly basis to provide a forum for families of students with Dyslexia. These meetings will be led by Dr. Sunaina Shenoy, who is an Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico and whose research expertise is in the area of identifying Dyslexia in bilingual and multilingual populations.

For our first meeting on February 9th at 5:30pm MST, which will be offered via a synchronous online Zoom platform, we plan to kick off the series by hearing from parents about topics that are of interest to them and what they might be interested in learning more about for future meetings.

Based on this, Dr. Shenoy will:

(a) reach out to guest speakers and panelists, such as researchers, teachers, educators, and other stakeholders who are happy to share their experiences and expertise with parents;

(b) find specific resources for parents to help their children with reading, math, and writing at home; and

(c) prepare mini lessons on topics of interest such as the IEP process, eligibility determination, understanding the federal register, understanding formal reports, parent advocacy etc.
