Week Of november 16
upcoming dates
November 23-27: Thanksgiving Break
December 21-January 4: Winter Break
THANK YOU, MS. BB
Ms. BB’s enthusiasm for teaching May School students is apparent when visiting her classes or discussing teaching. It even comes through in simple emails like, “I love May School students!” or “ I love 1:1 meetings!” We are lucky to have her and her teaching expertise with us this year!
Here’s what some of her students have to say:
“From a 1 to 10, she’s a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000!”
“She gives us lots of interesting projects.”
“The projects aren’t too small or too big. They’re just right.”
“She is nice and she is stern. I like that.”
Continuing education
Our teacher’s don’t miss a beat! Many of our teachers attended the International Dyslexia Association conference this past Friday and Saturday. Topics included “Maximize Learning with Executive Function Skills,” “The Writing Relationship between Dyslexia and Dysgraphia,”Making Online Learning Engaging and Effective.” We look forward to seeing them utilize tools and strategies from this conference in their classrooms.
Virtual Assembly
Mr. Bret continues to serve as the May School MC & DJ. He is now hosting bi-weekly assemblies for our Intermediate and Elementary students. Along with shout-outs to students who have celebrated recent birthdays, Bret is known to host trivia games and tell seasonal jokes. This week, students were encouraged to email gratitudes in preparation for Thanksgiving.
Mindful Moment for Families X 2
Mindful walking cultivates awareness of your body while in motion and it’s something you can practice throughout the day. It can help increase your energy level if you are tired or restless and also add variety if you’re doing longer periods of seated practice.
Try this guided mindful walking practice from Mindful Schools.
A student (and teacher!) favorite this week comes from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Watch moon jellies move with the current as they pulsate their delicate, translucent bells.
These dreamy drifters know how to go with the flow. Moon Jelly Cam
Parent Support group
At a time when many of us continue to feel disconnected, we want to offer a chance to come together. Based on parental feedback, we have created a support group to give you a chance to connect with other parents during this incredibly challenging time. Topics will range from parenting children with learning differences and anxiety, to effective ways to deal with your own parenting stress, to topics requested by group participants. The group will be facilitated by May Center's Jamie Shannon-Owings, who is not only an amazing MC teacher but who is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor.
The group is limited to a total of six families for participation, and we already have a few families signed up. The cost of participation is $10/session. Please send an email to liz@maycenter.org by Monday, November 23, if you would like to participate!
The group will begin meeting on Tuesday Dec. 1st from 3-4pm via Google Meet, and then will meet roughly every 2 weeks thereafter with the following dates confirmed thus far:
Tuesday Dec 15, 3-4pm
Tuesday Jan 5, 3-4pm
Tuesday Jan 19, 3-4pm
