Week of November 18
POetry + Pie
We look forward to seeing you this Friday, November 22nd at 1:00 in the Fellowship Hall for our annual Poetry and Pie celebration. Students will recite poetry and provide an extra special performance that they have been preparing for weeks. Pie and drinks will be served following the performance.
RESOLVE PARENT SEMINAR
Intermediate students as well as students in Jamie and Ellen’s classes are participating in Resolve safety classes. These classes support our students in creating healthy boundaries with others as well as actions to take if boundaries have been broken.
Resolve is offering a free seminar to all May School parents, regardless as to whether or not your child is taking the Resolve class. The seminar will be held at 6pm on Wednesday, December 4th. This seminar for parents and caregivers covers real versus perceived personal safety dangers to children, such as issues around abduction and sexual abuse.
Parents often face the question of how much to tell children to prepare them and how much to keep from them to preserve their innocence. Some of the class will be spent discussing what parents’ role is in teaching safety concepts, and how to use opportunities to develop children’s intuition and self-reliance instead of fear or paranoia.
Childcare will be provided. Children will be served pizza and have the opportunity to draw, play with legos or watch a movie. Please RSVP to Patty Conway, patty@maycenter.org, by Monday, December 2nd for childcare.
AFTER SCHOOL ART CLASSES
Ms. Marjorie is offering another after school art class that is open to all Elementary and Intermediate students. The focus of the classes will be on making holiday gifts.
Dates: Wednesday, December 4, 11 and Tuesday, December 17
Time: 3:15-4:30
Cost: $10 for all three sessions
Space is limited to the first 9 students to sign up. Email Marjorie Hanus to reserve your spot. marjorie@maycenter.org.
Mercury transit
Did you know that Mercury transited the sun on Monday? Thanks to a May School parent, our students were able to witness this transit through his solar telescope. Mercury transits the sun about 13 times every 100 years. The next transit will happen in 2032.
The black dot you see is Mercury. This image is similar to what students were able to see through the solar telescope.
BENTHIC FIELD TRIP
Intermediate students took their river studies to a whole new level this week. On Tuesday, students went to our Cerro Gordo river site to collect benthic macroinvertebrates. They were joined by Rich Schrader and Carlos Herrera from RiverSource and Dr. Jerry Jacobi, professor emeritus from NM Highlands. Students collected macroinvertebrates and returned to school to sort, identify and count the aquatic life, which included mayflies, caddisflies and stoneflies, along with many others. They counted nearly 600 macroinvertebrates. Students then learned how the diversity of the macroinvertebrates speaks to the water quality at the time of the sampling.
LOW SENSORY CIRCUS LUMINOUS PERFORMANCE
The Lensic is sponsoring a low sensory performance of Circus Luminous on December 1. This will be a great opportunity to experience Circus Luminous in a less stimulating format. Tickets are available on the Lensic website. In addition, they are looking for some volunteers to help provide activities for kids at the low-sensory performance from 3-6 pm. All you need to do is show up and they will tell you what to do. Volunteers will receive free passes to an upcoming Lensic event. Please contact Amy Miller to sign up to volunteer. amy@maycenter.org
