WEATHER DELAY + CLOSURES
For families of in person students:
It looks like our first winter storm is approaching early next week. We typically follow Santa Fe Public Schools’ closures and delays, but with the public schools being online at this time, we will make our own decision based on road conditions in a number of areas of town. You can expect an email to go out by 7:00 am to give you information if there is a school delay or closure.
The nature connection
Ms. Betsy is guiding the online Elementary students through science curriculum based on the book The Nature Connection by Clare Walker Leslie. This book is designed to get children outside in nature and is filled with ideas about what to observe in our own backyard. Even looking out a window can reveal all sorts of things. The students are able to keep track of their observations in the book and also bring their ideas back to the class to share. The suggestions in the book are also a great way to spend time outdoors (away from screens!) as a family.
RIVERSOURCE VIRTUAL VISIT
Ms. Kathy and Ms. Trudy have worked with River Source over the last several years to bring the Watershed Watch Program (with funding from NM Department of Game and Fish) to our students. In a typical year, this program allows students to monitor the health of water by monitoring streamflow and water quality. This year they have developed an online curriculum in addition to a hands on curriculum that will be provided for each student. On Wednesday, Rich and Carlos from River Source joined our Intermediate students via Google Meet to share information about our watershed as well as to introduce the program. We have been chosen as one of the schools in Santa Fe to receive soil kits for each student to be able to learn about and explore soil quality. We’re grateful to Rich and Carlos for working to continue their programming in a creative way this year!
CONNECTING MAY SCHOOL STUDENTS
This week Ms. Jamie and Ms. Ellen’s students have been writing haiku poems. On Thursday, Ms. Jamie’s online students and Ms. Ellen’s in person students had the opportunity to connect with one another by presenting their writings. This is not only a great way to practice presentation skills but also to give students time to connect with more peers. Thank you for coordinating this, Ms. Jamie and Ms. Ellen!
ONLINE LEARNING TIPS FOR STUDENTS WITH DYSLEXIA
Many students across the country are navigating through the challenges of online learning. Online learning can have additional challenges for students with dyslexia. KOB reached out to our very own Executive Director, Amy Miller to share insights into working with students with dyslexia while online. You may check out the interview here.
