Owl Vision
Art: This week in Ms. Brenda’s class, the students made their own fantasy gloves using mixed media, in addition to creating simple-frame watercolors and “dream drawings.”
Science: This week, over 100 apples were taste-tested, experimented with, peeled, cored, chopped, slow-cooked into applesauce, and devoured by Elementary students!
The Intermediate classes explored the difference between physical changes and chemical changes with Mentos and Diet Coke as well as making elephant toothpaste. They also created models of the Nile River flooding to coincide with what they are learning in History class and started an engineering project to build a model Shaduf, an ancient irrigation tool. We hope to grow some salad sprout crops in the coming weeks!
Ms. Clementine’s class experimented with Play-Doh, making their own version of a chemical change.
Reading: In “Jack’s Library,” Ms. Connie led Ms. Corrie’s class in reading an article in The New Mexican about placing a statue of Don Diego De Vargas into a museum. This encouraged conversation and education related to the controversy surrounding the conquistadors and the monuments.
Ms. Nia’s class started reading the book Hatchet and did some supplemental research on flying an aircraft.
Ms. Jennifer’s class began reading Because of Winn-Dixie.
The Elementary students read Chrysanthemum and The Day the Crayons Quit, in addition to doing corresponding art activities.
Assembly
Last Friday at Assembly, the Intermediate students formed groups and collectively worked together to plan and construct a building of their creation out of Lego’s.
Around the Nest
This week, we had a couple of indoor recesses due to inclement weather. The students had fun playing board games, Lego’s, and doll house.

Book Club Night with Ms. Carol
Please see below for more information from Ms. Carol about our inaugural Adult Book Club Night this October:
Help us launch our new book club this month! October is Dyslexia Awareness Month so we'll be starting with The Dyslexia Empowerment Plan: A Blueprint for Renewing Your Child's Confidence and Love of Learning by Ben Foss.
We will be meeting Thursday, October 24 from 5:00–6:30 pm at May Center. Childcare will be provided. We will do no pressure potluck; Carol will be making chili for this first meetup. If you'd like to bring any accompaniments or something else, please sign up at this link so we know what to expect.
Please don't feel like you have to bring anything, we just want you to come and join in the encouraging discussion! It is also perfectly fine if you don't get a chance to read the whole book or even read it at all. You are invited to just come and listen or participate as much or as little as you want.
Looking forward to seeing you there! Please RSVP to Carol at carol@maycenter.org to let us know how many to expect.
