Week Of September 8
FIrst Days of school
May School students are the best! Our online students are well on their way to navigating Google classroom, doing a great job of taking turns while online and, most importantly, learning how to use emojis in chat. Students coming to school in person are doing a great job of following our safety procedures throughout the school day: wearing masks, keeping distance, washing and sanitizing their hands.
Our students are enjoying making connections with teachers and students already!
MEET MS. KATHY CORCORAN
Kathy is a new member of the May School teaching team. She is teaching SEE and science to online students. She comes to us with years of experience in teaching science and resource instruction. Her excitement for science education comes through in all of our conversations. This week, her science students began reviewing the water cycle with a focus on the vocabulary of each step in the cycle.
Fun fact: Ms. Kathy lives in a floating home!

The hoot
Just in the few days of having students back at school, we’re reminded of the great things we overhear students say. This year we will feature this section to share what we hear from students.
“ I love your rules. I love them all year.” - 1st grade student
“This Intermediate thing is WAY better than I expected” - 4th grade student
“ I love my teacher. She’s great!” - 5th grade student
MAY AWAY
We are excited to launch our first session of May Away this coming Monday, September 14! May Away is a new remote learning experience featuring small learning cohorts of no more than 4 students focusing on reading, writing, and mathematics. May Away is a great choice for students who are homeschooling this year or who need some additional structured, direct instruction as a supplement to their school’s remote learning program. This fall, we have students participating in our May Away program from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Texas, and Florida, and we have May Away teachers from Santa Fe and Pennsylvania!
COMMUNITY SEMINAR: DYSLEXIA: IDENTIFICATION, INTERVENTION, AND ADVOCACY
Join us at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 21
What is dyslexia and how does it present for children in the home and at school? This overview of dyslexia explains the cognitive differences in children who learn differently, identifies characteristics of dyslexia, and discusses best practices for intervention. We will also address New Mexico’s new dyslexia law and how parents can best advocate for their students. Community seminars are free and open to the public and are a great way for parents who are new to May Center to learn more about their child and how to best support them at home. This year’s community seminars will be presented through Google Meet or Zoom. A link will be sent out as we get closer to the event. Presented by Amy Miller, May Center for Learning Executive Director.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT MASK FOR YOU
Masks are definitely not one-size-fits-all. Finding one that can stay over your mouth and nose throughout the day can take some time. Here’s guidance from the CDC on how to select, wear and clean your mask.
