June 23 and 24: 24 hours for May School Scholars Fund
Thank you to those of you who have already contributed generously to our May Scholars Fund, which is devoted to providing financial aid for May School students during this time of increased need. Please mark your calendars for our 24-hour matching funds campaign, which begins at 3:00 pm Tuesday, June 23, and goes until 3:00 pm Wednesday, June 24. During this 24-hour campaign, facilitated through the Charidy organization, our generous matchers will match every dollar raised. This is the time to reach out to your friends and family members to ask them to give. Every dollar raised goes to support financial aid. Look for more information coming soon in the mail, through email, and on May Center’s Facebook page.
Summer Leap
Our summer LEAP spots are filling fast. Prevent summer slide, build foundational skills in reading, mathematics, and writing, and keep your child excited about learning. Current May School families receive a discounted rate. Sign up today!
Materials drop off guidelines
Please plan to return May School materials, including computers, chargers, textbooks, and any manipulatives or Montessori materials to May Center on Friday, May 22, between 9 and 11 am. Binders, novels, notebooks, folders, and Story of the World books are yours to keep.
*If your child is attending summer LEAP, they can keep the computer and charger until the end of the session.*
Please disinfect all materials using a germ-killing disinfectant before returning them to school. Please disinfect the keyboard and outside of the computer using a cleaning wipe or isopropyl alcohol and soft cloth. Please do not spray disinfectant directly on the computer and do not clean the screen. Check out these guidelines for cleaning electronics.
In order to follow social distancing guidelines, please read the following drop off procedures:
Early Childhood, Elementary, and Intermediate materials will be dropped off in front of their respective entrances. Please pull up and wait in line as you would for student pick up. Please remain in your car while waiting. When a May School staff member signals, please place all materials on the table closest to the parking lot. These tables will be cleaned after each pick up. Once you place the materials on the table, please wait for the teacher to move the bag and check off the items you have returned. Please wear a mask during this transaction. Although we are excited to see you all, this will not be a time for a conversation. If you have further questions for your child's teacher or administrator, please contact them at another time. We all need to be safe and considerate as we keep a smooth and expedient flow of traffic.
Thumos Thursdays
Show your excitement for summer! Do you love swimming? Wear goggles. Camping? Wear a headlamp. We look forward to hearing what you enjoy about summer.
Social Clubs
Social clubs were a great success to help students connect with one another outside of class time. We wish we would have recorded each one as there were many cherishable moments in each club. Here are a few highlights:
Intermediate students singing Anime songs together - Ms. Patty learned a lot from this group!
An Intermediate student read a full chapter of Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak.
An elementary student exclaimed, “I’m so excited to see my friend (online) today. I haven’t seen him in years!” - a nice glimpse into the concept of time for children.
Thank you, Mr. Bret, for organizing this opportunity each week.
Elementary art
Elementary students have enjoyed working with Ms. Marjorie in art class. Each class is presented with a weekly challenge. Students have shown great resourcefulness with using supplies they have at home. When presented with a puppet challenge, students used socks, cardboard and even legos with a moving mouth to create amazing puppets.
This week’s challenge was to make something weather related. Allie M. made a snowstorm made out of cardboard and cotton balls, James J. made a shadow box of a stormy day, Gavin S. made a picture of a windy fall day using mini Reese’s peanut butter cups and Kit Kats and Clara mad a cereal box cloud with blue paper raindrops glued to clear string.
Art class has allowed the students to be together in a creative space to share ideas and witness each other’s artistic process.
